Fleas: How to Get Rid of Them and Keep Them Away for Good

Our warm climate is a paradise for fleas, and they're one of the most common — and most frustrating — problems pet owners face. The trick is understanding that treating the pet is only half the job: most of the flea population lives in your home, not on your animal.

Why fleas are so hard to beat

For every flea you see on your pet, dozens of eggs, larvae and pupae are hiding in carpets, bedding and cracks in the floor. That's why a quick bath rarely fixes it — you have to break the whole life cycle.

Treating your pet

• Use a proper, vet-recommended flea treatment — a chewable tablet, spot-on or collar. Cheap supermarket products often don't work well.
• Treat every pet in the home at the same time, even the ones that seem fine.
• Keep up treatment year-round, not just when you spot fleas.

• Wash all pet bedding (and your own, if pets sleep with you) on a hot wash.
• Vacuum thoroughly — floors, carpets, skirting and sofas — and throw the bag or empty the canister outside afterwards.
• For heavy infestations, an environmental flea spray or a professional treatment may be needed.

Why it matters beyond the itch

Fleas aren't just uncomfortable. They can cause severe allergic skin reactions, carry tapeworm, and in young or small animals, heavy infestations can even cause dangerous anaemia. Consistent, year-round prevention is far easier than fighting an outbreak — so once you're on top of it, don't stop.
