You Found a Stray Dog in South Africa: What Now

First, safety

Approach slowly, from the side rather than head on, crouched and not looming. Avoid direct eye contact. Offer food rather than a hand.

A frightened dog that has been living rough may snap without much warning. If there is any doubt, contain rather than handle — a gate, a garage, a bathroom.

Check your own vaccination assumptions. Any bite from an unknown dog is a medical matter given rabies is present in South Africa.

Finding the owner

• Get the dog scanned for a microchip — any vet or SPCA will do this free
• Post on local community groups and neighbourhood watch pages with a photo and the area found
• Notify your local SPCA and nearby vets, who receive lost reports
• Check the local lost pet pages, which are often where the owner is already looking
• Put up notices at the shops and the vet nearest to where you found the dog

Hold back one identifying detail from public posts — a scar, a collar colour — so you can verify a caller.

The legal position

In South African law a lost animal remains the property of its owner. Taking a dog home does not make it yours, and an owner who traces it later has a claim.

You are expected to make reasonable efforts to find the owner. Documenting those efforts — screenshots of posts, the date of the microchip scan, the SPCA reference — protects you.

Handing the dog to the SPCA starts a formal holding period after which it can lawfully be rehomed. That is the cleanest route if you cannot keep it.

If you keep it

Get a full veterinary check: vaccination, deworming, tick and flea treatment, sterilisation and microchipping in your name.

Assume unvaccinated. Keep the dog separate from resident animals for a week or two, and be alert for sarcoptic mange, biliary and parvovirus.

Expect roughly R2,500 to R5,000 to get an unknown adult dog fully sorted. Welfare clinics will do it for considerably less.

If you cannot keep it

Phone the SPCA before arriving. Branches are frequently full and knowing in advance whether they have space matters.

Foster networks and breed-specific rescues often have capacity when general shelters do not. A post in a local group asking for a foster placement rather than a home sometimes finds one within hours.

Do not simply move the dog to another area and release it. That is abandonment and it is an offence.
