The cancer conversation

Golden Retrievers have one of the highest cancer rates of any breed — haemangiosarcoma, lymphoma and osteosarcoma dominate. Haemangiosarcoma in particular often presents as a sudden collapse from internal bleeding in a dog who seemed fine the day before. If your Golden collapses and the gums are pale, that is an emergency, not a wait-and-see.

Cremation costs

At 27–35kg expect roughly R2,300–R3,800 for individual cremation with ashes returned in South Africa, R850–R1,500 communal, plus R350–R700 collection from home. Give a realistic weight when you phone; Goldens are frequently heavier than owners estimate.

When it happens suddenly

Sudden loss from an internal bleed leaves no time to prepare and no chance to plan the goodbye. If it happens at an emergency hospital, ask before you leave whether they can take a lock of fur for you — most will, and almost nobody thinks to ask in that moment.

Keeping the coat

A Golden's coat is one of the most recognisable things about them, and a lock from the chest or the feathering behind the legs makes a keepsake families are grateful for years later. Take it before collection; it cannot be done afterwards.
