Grain-Free Diets and Heart Disease (DCM): What We Actually Know
Where this started
The FDA began investigating reports of dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) — a serious heart condition — in dogs eating certain boutique, grain-free diets heavy in peas, lentils and legumes, including breeds not genetically prone to it.
What we know now
The picture is genuinely complicated: no single ingredient has been proven guilty, and research continues. What's clear is that 'grain-free' was always a marketing idea, not a medical one — grains don't harm the vast majority of dogs, and allergies to grain are rare.
Sensible feeding
Most veterinary nutritionists suggest choosing brands that employ full-time nutritionists, run feeding trials, and meet WSAVA guidelines. If your dog is on a legume-heavy grain-free diet, don't panic — just discuss it at your next vet visit.
Signs worth checking
Reduced stamina, coughing, fainting or labored breathing warrant a vet exam in any dog. DCM caught early can improve, especially diet-associated cases where taurine and a food change are part of treatment.
