Short lives, sharp declines

Great Danes, mastiffs and Saint Bernards frequently decline sharply from seven or eight. Bloat, cardiomyopathy and osteosarcoma dominate. Bloat in particular is a true emergency — a Dane with a distended abdomen retching unproductively has hours, not days, and needs an emergency hospital immediately.

You cannot move them alone

A 70kg dog cannot be lifted by one person and will not fit in most cars. This is the single most practical reason to plan a giant breed's end-of-life in advance. Home euthanasia and home collection are not luxuries for these dogs; they are close to necessities.

What it costs

Individual cremation for a giant breed runs roughly R3,000–R5,500 in South Africa, communal R1,200–R2,200, and collection R500–R900 because it needs two people and a stretcher. A home euthanasia visit adds R1,500–R3,500.
