Rugs, Ramps and Traction: Helping a Wobbly Senior Dog

The home becomes an obstacle course

For a dog with stiff, ageing joints, the everyday home can turn hostile — slick floors that splay their legs, sofas grown too high, stairs that ache. Much of the wobbliness owners notice is as much about the environment as the arthritis itself, and much of it is fixable.

Traction first

Slippery tiles and laminate are frightening for a dog who can't grip. Lay runners and rugs along their main routes, add non-slip mats at food bowls and doorways, and keep the fur between their paw pads trimmed. Toe-grip nail covers or dog socks help on the worst surfaces.

Ramps, steps and soft landings

A ramp or pet steps let a dog reach the sofa, bed or car without a painful jump that risks injury. Raise food and water bowls to shoulder height to spare the neck and back. A supportive orthopaedic bed away from draughts eases the stiff mornings.

Keep them moving, gently

Rest isn't the answer — gentle, regular movement keeps joints working and muscles supporting them. Short, frequent walks on grass, and your vet's advice on pain relief, joint diets or physiotherapy, keep a senior dog confident on their feet for far longer.
