At-Home Grooming Basics for Dogs and Cats
Grooming is about far more than looks. Regular brushing, nail care and the occasional bath keep your pet's skin and coat healthy, prevent painful matting, and give you a chance to spot lumps, wounds or parasites early. Here's how to handle the basics calmly at home.
Brushing
- Brush according to coat type — long or double coats often need it several times a week; short coats less often.
- Regular brushing removes loose hair (less shedding and fewer hairballs), spreads natural oils, and prevents mats, which can pull painfully on the skin.
- Keep it gentle and positive, with breaks and praise.
Nail trims
- Overgrown nails are uncomfortable and can affect how a pet walks. If you hear clicking on the floor, they're likely too long.
- Trim just the tips with proper pet nail clippers, avoiding the pink "quick" (the blood vessel inside). Take a little at a time.
- If you're nervous, ask your vet or groomer to show you once — it's easy after that.
Bathing
- Most dogs only need a bath every few weeks at most — over-bathing dries the skin. Most cats groom themselves and rarely need one.
- Use a pet shampoo (human products are the wrong pH), lukewarm water, and rinse thoroughly.
- Dry well, especially ears and skin folds.
Make it a bonding time
Go slowly, use treats, and stop before your pet gets stressed. Done gently and regularly, grooming becomes a calm, connecting routine — and a health check rolled into one.
If the day is coming
Ease The Paw coordinates in-home pet euthanasia across South Africa — we find and book the vet, arrange the cremation and handle the keepsakes, so you can simply be present. A flat R950 covers the coordination and your keepsake memorial; the vet and cremation are billed separately at their own rates.
