How Much Should Pet Cremation Cost? A Fair-Price Guide

What a fair price looks like

A fair individual cremation with ashes returned sits around R1,100–R2,000 for a cat or small dog, R1,800–R3,000 for a medium dog, and R2,400–R5,500 for large and giant breeds. Communal should be R400–R2,200. If a quote is far above these for your pet’s size, ask what justifies it.

Collection at R250–R600 and a basic urn included are reasonable. A handling fee from a vet is normal but should be modest and disclosed.

Too cheap can be a warning too

Be a little cautious of an ‘individual’ cremation priced like a communal one — genuine individual cremation has a real floor cost. Ask how they guarantee the ashes are your pet’s. A confident, clear answer is reassuring; a vague one is a reason to look elsewhere.

The goal isn’t the lowest number — it’s a fair number for what’s genuinely provided.

The one habit that protects you

Get the full total in writing before you commit, and compare quotes like-for-like (same type, both including collection and urn). That’s how you pay a fair price with no surprises.
