How Much Should You Feed a Puppy?
Meals by age
Roughly: four meals a day until about 12 weeks, three until around six months, then two for life. Puppies burn fuel fast and have small stomachs — several small meals beat one banquet.
How much
Start from the bag's guide for expected adult weight, then adjust to the individual: you should feel ribs easily under a slight cover and see a waist. The guide overshoots for many puppies — your eyes and hands outrank the label.
Large-breed caution
Big breeds must grow slow, not fast: overfeeding and excess calcium in giant-breed puppies contribute to joint disease. Feed a large-breed puppy formula and keep them lean — a roly-poly Great Dane puppy is a future orthopedic patient.
Treats and toppers
Training treats count in the daily total — use part of the kibble ration or pea-sized soft treats. Skip constant menu-changing; a growing gut likes consistency. Sudden appetite loss in a puppy, unlike an adult, is always worth a same-day vet call.
