Puppy Fear Periods: When Your Bold Puppy Suddenly Spooks
What fear periods are
Development includes windows — commonly around 8–11 weeks and again somewhere in adolescence — when the brain flags new (and even familiar) things as potentially dangerous. Yesterday's fine wheelie bin becomes today's monster. It's neurology, not regression.
What it looks like
Sudden startling, backing away, barking at ordinary objects, refusing a familiar route. The key tell: it's new behavior in a previously confident puppy, often overnight.
How to respond
Never force contact ('flooding' cements fear) and never punish the fear. Add distance, act relaxed, let them observe and approach at their own pace, and pay any brave investigation generously. Your calm is the information they're reading.
Protect the window
During a fear period, keep experiences positive and skip avoidable scares (fireworks night is a bad week for the vet visit). One bad event in a fear window can imprint for years; a hundred gentle wins build the confident adult you're hoping for.
