Indoor Cat Enrichment: Catios, Puzzle Feeders and a Happier Cat

Why enrichment isn't optional

Indoor cats are safer from cars, predators and disease — but an under-stimulated cat becomes an overweight, over-grooming, 3 a.m.-zoomies cat. Boredom is a welfare issue, and the fix is designing a more interesting indoors.

Think vertical and visual

Cats measure real estate in height: cat trees by windows, cleared bookshelf routes, window perches over a bird feeder view. Two resource stations (litter, water, scratching) per cat, spread out, keeps multi-cat peace.

Make them hunt

Ditch the bowl: puzzle feeders, treat balls, and 'hunting' portions hidden around the house satisfy the predatory sequence. Add one or two wand-toy sessions daily that end in a 'catch' and a snack — play that ends in success is deeply calming.

Catios and safe outdoors

A catio — from a window box to a full backyard enclosure — gives sun, smells and bird TV with zero traffic risk, and kits are widely available in the US. Leash-and-harness training works for many cats too, started slow and indoors first.
