The long-lived terrier

Jack Russells routinely reach 14–16, which means most owners face a slow decline rather than a sudden loss: failing sight and hearing, arthritis, kidney changes, and often canine cognitive dysfunction. That long runway is a gift if you use it — it gives you time to decide what you want the last day to look like, before you are deciding it in a panic.

Cremation costs

At 6–8kg a Jack Russell falls into the small-dog bracket. In South Africa that is roughly R1,300–R2,100 for an individual cremation with the ashes returned, or R400–R900 communal. Home collection adds R250–R500. Prices vary by province, with Gauteng and the Western Cape generally at the higher end.

Home or clinic

A terrier who has been anxious at the vet their whole life is often better served by a home euthanasia, where the last thing they smell is their own house. It costs more — expect R1,200–R3,500 for the vet's home visit versus R450–R1,500 at a clinic — but for a dog with a lifetime of clinic stress it is money well spent.
