What the vaccine is for

Canine influenza (dog flu) is a contagious respiratory infection that spreads fast wherever dogs mix — kennels, daycare, grooming, shows and dog parks. The K9 influenza vaccine doesn’t always prevent infection outright, but it reduces the severity, the duration and how much an infected dog spreads it — much like the human flu shot.

It’s considered a ‘lifestyle’ vaccine: recommended based on a dog’s exposure risk rather than given to every dog automatically.

Which dogs benefit most

Your vet is likely to recommend it for dogs who board, attend daycare, are groomed regularly, compete or show, or frequent busy dog parks — anywhere lots of dogs share air. A dog who mostly stays home with minimal contact is lower priority. If there’s a known outbreak in your area, the calculation changes.

It’s usually an initial two-dose series a few weeks apart, then annual boosters.
