Keeping Pets Cool and Safe in the South African Summer

South African summers are glorious for us, but for our pets — especially thick-coated dogs, flat-faced breeds and older animals — the heat can be genuinely dangerous. Heatstroke can develop in minutes and become life-threatening, so a little prevention goes a very long way.

The golden rules

• Never leave a pet in a parked car. Even with windows cracked, the inside of a car becomes an oven within minutes. This one mistake takes pet lives every summer.
• Walk early or late. Avoid the midday sun — aim for early morning or after sunset when the tar has cooled. Press the back of your hand to the pavement: if it's too hot for you, it's burning their paws.
• Fresh water, everywhere. Multiple bowls, topped up and in the shade. Drop in a few ice cubes on scorching days.
• Shade and airflow. Make sure outdoor pets can always reach deep shade, not just a patch that disappears by noon.

Spotting heatstroke

Act immediately if you see heavy, frantic panting, drooling, bright red gums, wobbliness, vomiting or collapse. These are emergencies.

What to do right away

• Move them to shade or a cool room.
• Wet them with cool (not ice-cold) water, especially the belly, paws and armpits.
• Offer small sips of water.
• Get to a vet urgently — heatstroke can cause internal damage even after they seem to cool down.

Extra care for high-risk pets

Flat-faced breeds (bulldogs, pugs, Persian cats), overweight pets, seniors and very young animals struggle far more in heat. On extreme days, keep them indoors with a fan and skip the walk altogether — a missed walk is better than a medical emergency.
