Litter Box Problems: The Checklist That Solves Most of Them

Vet first, always

A cat peeing outside the box may have a urinary infection, crystals, kidney disease or arthritis making the box painful to enter. Straining with little urine — especially in male cats — is an emergency. Rule out medicine before psychology.

Box logistics

The formula: one box per cat plus one, in quiet but accessible spots (not beside a noisy machine or in a dead-end corner), scooped daily, washed regularly, most cats preferring large, uncovered boxes with unscented clumping litter. Change one variable at a time and watch.

Location and politics

In multi-cat homes, one cat can silently ambush another at the box — spread boxes across rooms and floors so no single cat controls access. Seniors may need lower sides and a box on every level of the house.

Clean like a pro

Enzymatic cleaners fully remove urine scent; ammonia-based products smell like more urine and invite repeats. Never rub a cat's nose in accidents or carry them to the box angrily — stress is usually the cause, and punishment adds more of it.
