Load-Shedding and Your Pets: Calm in the Dark

In places where scheduled power cuts are a fact of life, pets feel the disruption too — the sudden dark, the beeping alarms, the loss of fans and cooling on a hot night. A little planning turns load-shedding from a scramble into a non-event for your animals.

Heat is the real danger

The biggest risk is losing cooling during summer cuts. Keep curtains drawn against the day's heat, leave plenty of fresh water in several spots (a frozen bottle in the bowl helps), and know the coolest room in the house. Never rely on an electric fan alone for a vulnerable pet.

Soothe the anxious ones

Alarms, inverters clicking on, and darkness can unsettle noise-sensitive pets. Keep a torch handy so you're not fumbling, maintain a calm tone, and give anxious pets a cosy retreat. A stuffed chew or familiar routine during the cut gives them something steadying to focus on.

Plan around the schedule

Check the schedule and feed, walk and settle pets before a cut where you can. Keep medications that need refrigeration in a cooler bag if outages run long, and make sure any electric pet doors, aquarium pumps or heat lamps have a backup plan. Prepared, it's just another quiet hour.
