What the final chapter usually looks like

Most live 10–13 years. The breed’s great weakness is the heart: hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) runs strongly in Maine Coons and can end life suddenly or through slow heart failure. Hip arthritis is common too in these heavy-boned cats.

Fast or laboured resting breathing is the home warning sign for a failing feline heart. If a sleeping Maine Coon takes more than about 40 breaths a minute, phone the vet.
