How to Safely Move an Injured or Deceased Pet to the Vet

Moving an injured pet

An injured animal is frightened and in pain, and even the gentlest pet may bite or scratch when hurt — so protect yourself first. Move slowly, speak calmly, and if there’s any risk of biting, a soft muzzle or a towel over the head can keep everyone safe (never muzzle a pet who is struggling to breathe or vomiting).

Support the whole body. For a suspected spinal or leg injury, slide them gently onto a firm, flat surface — a board, a rigid box lid, or a taut blanket used as a stretcher with a person at each end — keeping the spine as straight and still as you can. For small pets, a sturdy box lined with a towel works well.

Moving a pet who has passed away

If your pet has died, there’s no rush — take the time you need first. When you’re ready, wrap them gently in a favourite blanket. Handle them with support under the body, as you would a sleeping pet. It’s normal for the body to release fluids or for muscles to twitch shortly after death; this is nothing alarming, just the body settling.

A firm base — a box or board under the blanket — makes carrying a larger pet far easier and more dignified than trying to lift them in your arms alone.

Getting them there

In the car, place them somewhere stable and flat where they won’t slide, and drive calmly. If your pet has passed at home and you’d rather not make the drive at all, a coordination service can arrange collection from your door — so you don’t have to move them yourself at the hardest moment.

For a large dog who can no longer stand or has passed, remember it’s genuinely a two-person job; call for help rather than risk hurting yourself or them.
