The New Puppy Checklist: What You Actually Need (and What You Don't)
The genuine essentials
Appropriately sized crate with divider, flat collar plus ID tag, lightweight leash, puppy food (whatever they're currently eating, changed gradually), bowls, a few varied chew toys, enzymatic cleaner, and a vet appointment already booked. That's honestly the core.
Worth adding
A playpen or baby gates (management prevents most problems), a snuffle mat or slow feeder, soft treats cut tiny for training, a long line for the garden, and a designated 'settle' bed. Pet insurance is cheapest to start now, before anything becomes pre-existing.
Cheerfully skippable
Puppy shoes, vast toy hauls (taste unknown), fancy bowls, retractable leashes (teach pulling), and 'puppy training kits'. The money is better saved for training classes and the chewing-phase furniture fund.
Setup that works
One puppy-proofed zone with floor you can clean, crate as the bedroom, pen as the playroom, and the rest of the house earned gradually with supervision. Puppies given a whole house find a whole house of trouble.
