What Orthopaedic Surgery Costs for Dogs in South Africa

Cruciate ligament repair

The most common orthopaedic surgery in South African dogs. The cruciate ligament in the knee degenerates and ruptures, usually in middle-aged medium and large breeds.

• Lateral suture technique, suited to smaller dogs — roughly R9,000 to R16,000
• TPLO or TTA, the gold standard for larger dogs — roughly R22,000 to R40,000 per knee

Roughly half of dogs rupture the other side within two years. Budget with that in mind.

Hip surgery

• Femoral head and neck excision, suited to smaller dogs — roughly R10,000 to R20,000
• Total hip replacement — roughly R45,000 to R80,000 per hip

For many dogs with hip dysplasia, weight management, controlled exercise and pain relief give a good quality of life without surgery. That path costs R500 to R1,500 a month and is often the right one.

Fracture repair

A simple fracture managed with a plate runs roughly R12,000 to R25,000. A complex or multiple fracture, or one needing an external fixator, runs R20,000 to R45,000.

Cost depends heavily on whether a specialist surgeon is involved and how much implant hardware is required. Ask whether your general practice does the procedure in-house or refers.

What rehabilitation adds

Post-operative physiotherapy and hydrotherapy are not optional extras for orthopaedic surgery — they materially change the outcome.

Expect R400 to R900 per session, with eight to twelve sessions typical. Some practices bundle a rehabilitation package into the surgical quote; ask whether yours does.

When surgery is not the answer

For an older dog with other health problems, or where the recovery involves eight weeks of strict crate rest that is not realistic in your home, conservative management is a legitimate choice.

Be honest with your vet about what your household can actually deliver. A surgery followed by a dog that will not be kept still is worse than no surgery.
