Who gets skipped
Black dogs and cats (they photograph poorly and read 'plain'), shy animals who shut down in kennels, big dogs, seniors, bonded pairs, and 'ordinary-looking' pets without a sad backstory. None of this predicts what they're like on your couch.
Kennels lie
A shelter is loud, stressful and confusing — the trembling dog at the back may be the calmest animal in the building at home, and the barking one merely desperate for out. Ask to meet candidates in a quiet room or on a walk; the difference is often astonishing.
Use the staff
Shelter workers and fosters know who's secretly wonderful. Try asking one question: 'Who's been here too long that you'd take home yourself?' You'll get the real answer, usually instantly, usually with feeling.
The long-stay bonus
Animals who've waited longest often come with the most staff knowledge, the most training work already done — and, adopters swear, a particular brand of gratitude. Someone is going to discover them. It might as well be you.
