Paw Print Keepsakes: Ink, Clay and What to Ask For

Ask before, never after

Like a lock of fur, a paw print can only be taken while the body is still with you or before the cremation. Most South African vets and crematoriums will do one if asked, often for free or a small charge — but almost none will offer unprompted. Ask on the first phone call.

Ink versus clay

An ink print on card is quick, clean and captures fine detail including the individual pad texture. A clay impression is three-dimensional and more durable, but needs 48–72 hours to air-dry out of sunlight and is easy to blur if pressed twice. Many families take both if offered.

Getting a good print

One clean, even press works better than several attempts — rolling or sliding smudges it. If you are doing it yourself, practise on a spare card first. Photograph the finished print flat, in good light, from directly above, in case you later want it turned into artwork.

Turning it into something

Framed canvas prints, engraved pendants and etched glass from a paw print photograph are all available in South Africa. Prices vary widely. There is no rush — a good photograph of the print keeps the option open indefinitely.
