What Blood Tests Cost for Pets in South Africa

The common panels and what they cost

• Haematology, the full blood count — roughly R400 to R800
• Basic biochemistry, kidney and liver — roughly R600 to R1,200
• Full biochemistry panel — roughly R1,100 to R2,400
• Thyroid testing — roughly R500 to R1,100
• Tick-borne disease smear or PCR — roughly R250 to R1,200

In-house machines give results in twenty minutes at a slightly higher unit cost. External laboratories such as IDEXX are cheaper but take a day or two.

What each one is looking for

The blood count looks at red cells, white cells and platelets — anaemia, infection, inflammation and, in South Africa, tick-borne disease.

Biochemistry looks at organ function: kidney values, liver enzymes, protein, glucose and electrolytes. It is the panel that most often changes a treatment plan.

A blood smear read under a microscope is how biliary is confirmed. It is cheap, fast and, in this country, one of the highest-value tests there is.

Senior screening

Many practices offer a senior wellness panel at roughly R900 to R1,800 that bundles blood count, biochemistry, thyroid and a urine test.

Run annually from about seven years for dogs and cats, this is how chronic kidney disease and hyperthyroidism get caught while they are still manageable. Both are far cheaper to manage early than to rescue late.

Pre-anaesthetic bloods

Quoted at R400 to R900 before a procedure. For a healthy young animal they rarely change anything. For a senior, or any animal on long-term medication, they are genuinely protective — they catch the kidney or liver problem that would have made a standard anaesthetic protocol unsafe.

Getting value out of the result

Ask for a copy. You are entitled to it, and having last year’s numbers to compare against is worth more than any single result in isolation.

A value drifting steadily upward within the normal range across three years tells you more than one value sitting just outside it. Keep them somewhere you can find them.
