What Pet Cancer Treatment Costs in South Africa
Getting to a diagnosis
Before anything can be treated it has to be identified and staged. That normally means a fine needle aspirate or biopsy, chest radiographs and an abdominal ultrasound.
Expect roughly R4,000 to R11,000 for a full diagnostic workup. A needle aspirate alone, which is often enough for a skin mass, is R700 to R1,600.
Surgery
Surgical removal is the mainstay for most solid tumours and often the only treatment needed.
- Skin mass removal — roughly R3,000 to R9,000
- Splenectomy — roughly R12,000 to R25,000
- Mammary chain removal — roughly R8,000 to R20,000
- Limb amputation — roughly R12,000 to R25,000
Chemotherapy and radiation
Chemotherapy for pets is dosed far more gently than for humans. The goal is quality of life and remission rather than cure, and most animals tolerate it well without losing their coat.
Expect R2,500 to R6,000 per session, with a lymphoma protocol running sixteen to nineteen weeks and totalling R35,000 to R80,000. Radiation is available at very few South African centres and runs R40,000 to R90,000 for a course.
Palliative care as a real choice
Choosing comfort care instead of treatment is a legitimate medical decision, not a lesser one. Good palliative care means pain control, appetite support and anti-nausea medication, typically R600 to R2,000 a month.
For an older animal with an aggressive tumour, months of feeling well can be worth more than a difficult treatment protocol that buys a similar amount of time.
The question underneath the numbers
Ask the oncologist or your vet two things: what does treatment realistically buy in time, and what will those weeks look like for my animal.
The answer to the second question matters more than the first. An animal does not understand that this month is difficult so that next year can exist. They only have this month.
If the day is coming
Ease The Paw coordinates in-home pet euthanasia across South Africa — we find and book the vet, arrange the cremation and handle the keepsakes, so you can simply be present. A flat R950 covers the coordination and your keepsake memorial; the vet and cremation are billed separately at their own rates.
