What to do first
Wrap them, keep them cool, take a lock of fur if you want one. On the Highveld in winter you have until morning comfortably. There is no legal requirement to involve a vet if your pet died naturally at home — you can contact a crematorium directly.
East Rand costs
Individual cremation with ashes returned runs roughly R1,150–R2,000 for a cat or small dog, R1,850–R3,000 for a medium dog and R2,400–R5,200 for large breeds. Communal runs R450–R2,100. Collection across Benoni, Boksburg, Kempton Park, Germiston, Edenvale, Alberton and Springs typically adds R250–R650.
Getting ashes back quickly
Turnaround is usually three to ten working days. If speed matters, arranging directly with a crematorium rather than through your vet often halves it, because most practices only have a collection run once or twice a week in each direction.
