This single question tells you most of what you need to know. A good crematorium will explain their identification system immediately — usually a numbered metal disc that stays with your pet through the process and is often returned with the ashes. Hesitation or vagueness here is your signal to phone elsewhere.

Check the price against the range

Individual cremation with ashes returned runs roughly R1,100–R5,500 in South Africa depending on weight. Communal runs R400–R2,200. Collection adds R250–R900. A quote far outside those bands deserves a second call before you commit, and grief is not a reason to accept the first number you are given.

Read the reviews, not the website

Anyone can write a compassionate paragraph. Look for reviews that describe the actual experience — did they arrive when they said, was the family treated kindly, did the ashes come back when promised and properly labelled. A crematorium with dozens of specific, recent reviews is a safer choice than one with none.

Ask whether you can visit

Not everyone wants to, but the willingness to say yes is informative. Operators running proper individual cremations are generally happy to show you the facility or let you be present. Those that refuse outright, without a clear reason, are worth a second thought.
