What a Pet Dental Costs in South Africa

Why it costs what it does

A pet dental is not a cleaning appointment. It is a general anaesthetic, a full oral examination with probing, usually dental radiographs, scaling above and below the gumline, and polishing.

A straightforward scale and polish with no extractions runs roughly R2,800 to R6,500. Most of that is the anaesthetic, the monitoring and the theatre time rather than the scaler itself.

What extractions add

Extractions are charged per tooth and vary enormously with difficulty. A loose incisor is quick; a fractured carnassial with three roots is surgery.

This is why a quote often comes as a range. Nobody can count the diseased roots until your pet is asleep and the radiographs are up.

Dental X-rays are worth paying for

Roughly half of significant dental disease sits below the gumline where it cannot be seen. Without radiographs, painful roots get left behind and the mouth is still sore afterwards.

Expect R600 to R1,500 for a full-mouth series. A practice that does not offer them is doing a partial job.

Is it worth it

Dental disease is the most under-treated painful condition in South African pets. Animals do not stop eating because of it — they simply chew on one side and get quieter.

The most common thing owners say afterwards is that their pet is behaving years younger. That is not the dental being magic; it is the pain having been there far longer than anyone realised.

Reducing how often it is needed

Daily brushing genuinely works and costs about R80 for a brush and pet toothpaste. Never use human toothpaste; the fluoride and xylitol are toxic.

Dental diets and veterinary-approved chews help. Anaesthetic-free scaling does not — it cleans only the visible crown, leaves the disease below the gum untouched, and is stressful for the animal.

If the day is coming

Ease The Paw coordinates in-home pet euthanasia across South Africa — we find and book the vet, arrange the cremation and handle the keepsakes, so you can simply be present. A flat R950 covers the coordination and your keepsake memorial; the vet and cremation are billed separately at their own rates.
