Your Pet Died Over the Weekend: What Is Actually Open
What is open on a South African weekend
Most veterinary practices run limited Saturday-morning hours and are closed Sundays. Emergency animal hospitals in the major centres operate 24/7 all weekend. Pet crematoriums vary widely: some are Monday-to-Friday only, others advertise 24-hour collection. Phone rather than assume — the ones that do collect on weekends are used to the call.
Keeping them until Monday
If nothing is available and you are willing to wait, a body kept genuinely cool is fine over a weekend in South African winter conditions. A garage on a cold Highveld night works. In summer, or anywhere humid, this is harder and worth paying a weekend collection fee to avoid.
Expect a weekend premium
After-hours and weekend collections often carry a surcharge, and some operators quote significantly more outside business hours. If a quote feels far above the normal range — individual cremation for a small dog usually runs R1,200–R1,900 in South Africa — it is entirely reasonable to phone somewhere else before you agree.
The Monday option
There is no harm in phoning a weekday crematorium on Monday morning if you can keep them cool until then, and it is often meaningfully cheaper. Do what suits your circumstances; there is no version of this that is more respectful than another.
If the day is coming
Ease The Paw coordinates in-home pet euthanasia across South Africa — we find and book the vet, arrange the cremation and handle the keepsakes, so you can simply be present. A flat R950 covers the coordination and your keepsake memorial; the vet and cremation are billed separately at their own rates.
