Common causes of sudden death

In apparently healthy dogs, the frequent causes are cardiac — including dilated cardiomyopathy in large breeds — internal bleeding from a ruptured splenic tumour, bloat in deep-chested dogs, and heatstroke. In cats, saddle thrombus from undiagnosed heart disease and urinary blockage in males. In South Africa, add tick-borne disease and snakebite, both of which can move fast.

The 'I should have known' loop

Most of these conditions are genuinely silent until the moment they are not. A splenic tumour causes no symptoms until it ruptures. Feline heart disease is often undetectable without an ultrasound. You are not going to reason your way out of this loop by re-examining last week; you are looking for a warning that in most cases was not there to see.

If you want an answer

A post-mortem is available through most South African veterinary practices and referral labs, usually costing several thousand rand. It needs to happen quickly — within about 24 hours, kept cool. For some families it settles the question permanently; for others it changes nothing. Decide honestly which you are.

Sudden grief is different

There was no anticipatory grief, no gradual preparation, no chance to say the things. That absence is its own wound and it takes longer to settle than an expected loss. Be patient with yourself on a timeline that will feel too slow.
