What It Costs to Hospitalise a Pet in South Africa
The daily rate
General practice hospitalisation runs roughly R800 to R2,000 per day. A twenty-four hour intensive care facility runs R2,500 to R6,000 per day.
The difference is staffing. A general practice usually has nobody on site overnight; an ICU has a nurse watching continuously. For a critical animal that distinction matters enormously.
What is usually included, and what is not
The daily rate typically covers the kennel, nursing care, basic monitoring and the intravenous fluids.
Billed separately, almost always: medications, blood tests, imaging, oxygen, syringe drivers, blood transfusions and any procedure. This is why a three-day stay quoted at R1,200 a day can arrive at R11,000.
Asking for a running total
You are entitled to ask for the bill to date at any point, and to be phoned before anything above an agreed ceiling is added. Set that ceiling explicitly when you admit.
A reasonable phrasing: please call me before we go past R8,000 so we can talk about what is next. Every practice can work with that.
Whether to visit
Ask. For some animals a visit settles them; for others it restarts the distress every time you leave. Nurses know which yours is by day two.
If your pet is not eating in hospital, ask whether you may bring their own food from home. It works more often than people expect.
When to talk about the ceiling
There is a point in a long hospitalisation where the honest question becomes whether further days are buying recovery or only buying time. Ask the vet directly what they would do with their own animal.
Most vets will answer that question straight if you ask it straight. It is a fair question and it is not giving up.
If the day is coming
Ease The Paw coordinates in-home pet euthanasia across South Africa — we find and book the vet, arrange the cremation and handle the keepsakes, so you can simply be present. A flat R950 covers the coordination and your keepsake memorial; the vet and cremation are billed separately at their own rates.
