What X-Rays and Scans Cost for Pets in South Africa
Radiographs
A radiograph series at a general practice runs roughly R900 to R2,200, depending on how many views are needed and whether sedation is required.
Sedation adds R400 to R1,200. It is often necessary for hip views or a painful abdomen, because a tense animal produces an unreadable image and the film has to be repeated.
Ultrasound
An abdominal ultrasound runs roughly R1,200 to R2,800 at a general practice, and R2,000 to R4,500 with a specialist or referral centre.
The gap is real. Ultrasound is heavily operator-dependent — the machine only shows what the person holding the probe knows to look for. For a complicated abdomen, the specialist scan is usually the cheaper option overall because it answers the question the first time.
CT and MRI
Available at referral centres in Gauteng, Cape Town and Durban, and at Onderstepoort.
- CT scan — roughly R8,000 to R16,000 including anaesthetic
- MRI — roughly R14,000 to R28,000 including anaesthetic
These are mostly used for spinal disease, complex fractures and cancer staging. They require full anaesthesia, which is a large part of the cost.
Which one answers your question
Radiographs are best for bone, chest and looking for obvious obstructions or fluid. Ultrasound is best for soft tissue detail, organ structure and guided sampling. They are complementary rather than alternatives.
It is entirely reasonable to ask: what will this scan tell us, and what would we do differently depending on the answer? If the treatment is the same either way, the scan can sometimes wait.
If the cost is out of reach
Ask whether images can be taken and sent to a teleradiologist rather than referring the whole animal. Many South African practices do this and it costs a fraction of a referral consultation.
Ask whether a staged approach makes sense — radiographs now, ultrasound only if the radiographs are inconclusive. Doing everything on day one is thorough, but it is not always necessary.
If the day is coming
Ease The Paw coordinates in-home pet euthanasia across South Africa — we find and book the vet, arrange the cremation and handle the keepsakes, so you can simply be present. A flat R950 covers the coordination and your keepsake memorial; the vet and cremation are billed separately at their own rates.
