Poisonous Plants to Watch Out for in South African Gardens

Curious pets love to chew on greenery, but a number of popular garden and indoor plants are toxic to dogs and cats. You don't need to rip up the garden — just know the risky ones and keep an eye out.

Common culprits

• Lilies — extremely dangerous to cats; even pollen or vase water can cause fatal kidney failure. Keep them out of any home with cats.
• Cycads — a beloved South African garden plant, but the seeds and stems are highly toxic to dogs and can cause liver failure.
• Oleander — every part is poisonous; affects the heart.
• Azaleas and rhododendrons — cause vomiting and worse.
• Delicious monster, arum lily and dieffenbachia — cause painful mouth swelling and drooling.
• Bulbs like daffodils and amaryllis — toxic, especially the bulb.

Reduce the risk

• Know what's growing in your garden and remove or fence off the most dangerous plants, especially if you have a chewer.
• Keep cut flowers (particularly lilies) out of reach, and pick up fallen leaves and seeds.
• Give bored pets safe things to chew — pet grass, toys and chews — so they're less tempted by the garden.

Don't wait for symptoms. Phone your vet immediately, and if you can, take a piece of the plant with you to help them identify it. As with all poisonings, quick action gives the best outcome.
