Pools, Electric Fences and Gate Motors: Suburban Hazards for South African Pets

The pool

Dogs drown in home pools every summer — usually not because they cannot swim, but because they fall in and cannot find the way out, exhausting themselves against a smooth wall in the dark. Puppies, old dogs with weak hindquarters, and storm-panicked dogs are the classic victims.

Teach every dog where the steps are, deliberately and repeatedly, until they can swim to them from anywhere. A fitted pool cover or fence is the real answer for puppies and frail seniors, and a floating pet ramp is cheap insurance. Check the pool first, immediately, any time a dog is unaccounted for.

The electric fence

A correctly installed, compliant electric fence delivers a painful but brief shock — frightening rather than dangerous for a large dog, but more serious for cats and small animals, and terrifying enough to make some dogs escape-proof themselves through it in a storm panic. Keep the bottom strands at compliant heights, and if a pet gets entangled rather than zapped-and-gone, cut power before touching anything.

Watch for behaviour changes after a shock: a dog newly terrified of the perimeter or of going outside at night may have met the fence, and needs gentle rebuilding of confidence, not force.

Gates and gate motors

Sliding gates injure and kill pets that chase them or sleep against the track. If your dog is a gate-chaser, manage the habit seriously — and always know where sleeping animals are before the gate moves. Check the safety-stop function on the motor; it exists for exactly this.
