Preparing Your Pet for a New Baby

Months before

Fix training gaps now (jumping, door manners, leash pulling with a stroller), refresh 'settle on a mat' and 'leave it', and gradually shift routines toward baby-era reality — walk times, sleeping arrangements, who feeds — so changes never coincide with the baby's arrival.

Introduce the evidence

Let pets explore equipment early (stroller walks, the swing that moves by itself), play recorded baby sounds at low volume rising over weeks, and establish the nursery rules calmly in advance — whether that's invited-only or a gate at the door. Novelty absorbed early is boredom by month nine.

The introduction

Someone else carries the baby in while you greet the pet you've been away from; introduce scent first (a worn baby blanket), then calm, leashed, treat-paired viewing at the pet's pace. Reward relaxed interest; never force proximity. Keep every pet-baby moment supervised — that rule has no expiry date.

Protect the pet's world

Keep their routines, exercise and one-on-one minutes sacred — most 'jealousy' is just need deficit. Teach visitors to greet the pet too, give cats baby-free vertical retreats, and remember: pets who associate the baby with good things (treats rain when the baby's around) become the childhood companions the photos promise.
