Puppy Development Stages: A Week-by-Week Guide

The early weeks (0–8 weeks)

Puppies are born blind and deaf, relying entirely on mum. Eyes open around two weeks, and by three to four weeks they start walking, playing and learning to be dogs. The socialisation window opens around week three — a crucial period where gentle exposure shapes who they become. Most puppies go to their new homes at eight weeks, after weaning and their first vaccinations.

Everything a breeder does in these weeks — handling, sounds, surfaces — matters more than almost anything that comes later.

The socialisation and juvenile stage (8–16 weeks)

This is the golden window. Between roughly 8 and 16 weeks, a puppy learns what’s normal and safe. Positive, gentle exposure to people, other dogs, cars, vets, sounds and surfaces now prevents fear later. It’s also when house-training, name recognition and basic manners begin. Vaccinations aren’t complete yet, so socialise carefully — carry them, use safe spaces, avoid high-risk areas.

This is also the land-shark phase: relentless biting and chewing as they teethe. It’s normal, and it passes.

Adolescence and adulthood (5 months+)

From around five months, puppies hit adolescence — testing boundaries, forgetting their training, and generally behaving like teenagers. Consistency and patience get you through. Small breeds mature by about a year; large and giant breeds take 18 months to two years to be fully grown in body and mind.

Feeding, exercise and training all scale with the stage — a growing giant-breed puppy has very different needs from a small breed.
