Surviving Your Puppy's First Night (Both of You)

Set expectations

Your puppy just lost mother, siblings and every familiar smell in one day. Some crying is grief and disorientation, not manipulation. Your job tonight is comfort and containment — training starts tomorrow.

The setup

Crate or secure bed beside your bed, not banished to the kitchen: your breathing and presence are the replacement litter. A blanket that smells of the litter, a wrapped warm (not hot) water bottle, and a soft toy imitate the puppy pile.

The night itself

Final toilet trip right before lights out. When crying starts, wait a beat — if it escalates, take them out for a boring, silent toilet break and straight back. No play, dim lights, minimal talk. Most puppies need one or two trips; most settle within a few nights.

The mindset

You cannot 'spoil' a baby animal by comforting it on night one; you can only teach it that the new world is safe. The sleepless phase is short. The dog it builds trust with is yours for a decade and a half.
