Puppy Development Stages: What Happens When
0–8 weeks: the foundation
Neonatal, transitional and early socialization periods happen at the breeder or rescue — which is exactly why the source matters. Puppies removed from littermates before about 8 weeks miss crucial bite-inhibition and dog-language lessons.
8–16 weeks: the golden window
The prime socialization window: gentle, positive exposure to people, surfaces, sounds, handling and calm dogs pays off for life. It overlaps a fear period around 8–11 weeks, so quality of experiences beats quantity. Vaccines run on the same clock — balance safety with carried exposure.
4–6 months: teething and testing
Adult teeth erupt (chewing peaks), attention spans grow, and the first whiff of independence appears. Keep training short and fun, freeze things for gums, and don't panic when recall briefly deteriorates.
6–18 months: adolescence
Hormones, boundary-testing, a second fear window, selective hearing — the age most dogs are surrendered, purely because owners didn't expect it. Hold routines, keep rewarding what you want, exercise the brain, and wait: the wonderful adult is loading.
