The Quality-of-Life Scale, Explained Plainly

What it measures

Most quality-of-life frameworks weigh the same seven things: pain, appetite, hydration, hygiene, happiness, mobility, and whether good days still outnumber bad. Each is scored, and the total gives you something more useful than a gut feeling on a bad afternoon.

Why scoring beats instinct

Decline is gradual, and humans adapt to gradual change without noticing. A dog who has slowly stopped doing five things over six months looks normal to the person who sees them every day. Scoring weekly and writing it down makes the trend visible in a way that living alongside it does not.

The most useful question

If you strip everything else away: are there still more good days than bad, and is that ratio moving in the right direction? Families almost always know the answer to this and frequently avoid asking themselves the question directly. Write the answer down each week and the pattern will tell you.

Taking it to your vet

A written record of several weeks is more useful to a vet than anything you can describe in a consultation. It moves the conversation from an opinion to a trend. Ease The Paw's free assessment takes about three minutes, requires no signup, and produces something you can print and take with you.

If the day is coming

Ease The Paw coordinates in-home pet euthanasia across South Africa — we find and book the vet, arrange the cremation and handle the keepsakes, so you can simply be present. A flat R950 covers the coordination and your keepsake memorial; the vet and cremation are billed separately at their own rates.
