The Ridgeback decline

Ridgebacks commonly reach 10–12. The final chapter is most often degenerative joint disease, cancer — particularly mast cell tumours and lymphoma — or dermoid sinus complications in poorly bred lines. They are stoic dogs and hide pain unusually well, so a Ridgeback who has simply gone quiet deserves a proper examination rather than a shrug about age.

Cremation costs

At 32–40kg a Ridgeback is a large dog on any South African price list. Expect roughly R2,400–R4,200 for individual cremation with ashes returned, R900–R1,600 communal, and R400–R800 for home collection. Prices sit at the higher end in Gauteng and the Western Cape.

Moving a large dog

A 35kg dog is a two-person lift and should be moved on a blanket rather than carried. If you are alone, do not attempt it — book a home collection and let a team with a stretcher handle it. Meanwhile keep the room as cool as you can and wrap them in something familiar.

Why home euthanasia often suits them

Ridgebacks are territorial and frequently unhappy at the vet. A home visit costs R1,500–R3,500 in South Africa versus R450–R1,500 at a clinic, but for a dog this size and this temperament it removes the worst of the last hour. Ask for sedation first as standard.
