In SANParks and most provincial reserves, formal permission is required and is often refused, so ask rather than assume. Beaches and public open spaces occupy a grey area; discretion and common sense are the practical guide. Never scatter into a river or borehole used for drinking water.

The practical mechanics

Go slowly and downwind. Ashes are finer than people expect and a Highveld afternoon breeze will carry them further than you intend, including back over you. Scatter low, close to the ground, in a sheltered spot. Some families prefer to pour rather than throw, which removes the risk entirely.

A compromise worth knowing

You do not have to choose all or nothing. Many families scatter a portion somewhere meaningful and keep the rest, or bury a portion under a tree and keep the remainder in the house. Ask your crematorium to divide them if you want this; it is a common request.

There is no timeline
