The shape of the spend

Costs for an ageing animal do not spike suddenly. They rise gradually as chronic conditions accumulate, which is why they catch households off guard.

A rough monthly picture for a senior dog in South Africa:

Where the money buys the most

Twice-yearly checkups with bloods. Catching kidney disease or hyperthyroidism early converts an expensive crisis into a managed condition.

Where you can economise honestly

Ask about generics for chronic medication — the saving is often substantial.

Buy chronic medication in larger quantities where the prescription allows.

Home adaptations cost almost nothing and do a lot: rugs on tiles for grip, a raised bowl, a ramp instead of stairs, a warm draught-free bed.

Weight management is free and is the most effective arthritis intervention there is. A leaner dog needs less pain medication.

Planning for what is coming

End-of-life costs in South Africa are real and worth knowing in advance rather than deciding under pressure. Euthanasia at a clinic, in-home euthanasia, and individual cremation each carry their own range.

Setting aside a small amount monthly from the point your animal becomes senior means the decision when it comes is about them rather than about money.

The thing worth tracking

Weigh monthly and write it down. Weight loss in an older cat, and weight gain in an older dog, are among the earliest and most useful signals there are.

Note appetite, thirst, mobility and sleep. Three months of simple notes are worth more to your vet than any single consultation.
