Separation Anxiety in Dogs: A Step-by-Step Recovery Plan

What it is (and isn't)

True separation anxiety is panic, not spite. Dogs bark, howl, destroy doorframes, drool, pace or have accidents because being alone terrifies them. Punishment makes it worse — they aren't misbehaving; they're drowning.

Rule out the basics

A bored under-exercised adolescent, a dog left 10 hours with a full bladder, or outside noise triggering barking can mimic anxiety. A camera pointed at the door for one absence tells you an enormous amount.

The core method: gradual departures

Desensitization works: leave for durations your dog can handle calmly — even 30 seconds — and build up slowly, mixing in fake departures (keys, shoes, then sit back down). Pair alone-time with a high-value frozen Kong. Progress is measured in weeks, not days.

Get help sooner, not later

Certified separation-anxiety trainers work remotely by camera very effectively, and for moderate-to-severe cases vets can prescribe anti-anxiety medication that makes training possible. Medication isn't failure — it's a ladder out of the pit.
