Most South African pet crematoriums will cremate rabbits, guinea pigs, birds, ferrets, rats and reptiles, though not all advertise it. Phone and ask directly — you will usually get a yes. Costs are at the very bottom of the price list, typically R600–R1,300 for an individual cremation with ashes returned.

The ash volume question

A budgie or a hamster produces a very small amount of ash, and some crematoriums will be honest that there may be almost nothing recoverable for the smallest animals. Ask before you pay for individual. For very small pets, many families choose a keepsake — a feather, a tuft of fur — over ashes.

Burial at home

For small pets, garden burial is legal in South Africa on your own property, provided the animal did not die of a notifiable disease and the grave is deep enough to deter scavengers — at least 60cm, more in sandy soil. Avoid burying near a borehole or water source.

The grief is not smaller

A child who has lost a guinea pig has lost a friend, and adults who have kept a house rabbit for eight years are losing a genuine companion. The size of the animal has nothing to do with the size of the loss, and anyone who suggests otherwise is not worth listening to.
