What the SPCA offers

SPCA branches across South Africa provide humane euthanasia, often at low cost or free for owners in financial difficulty. The procedure is the same one used at private practices, performed by qualified staff. Phone your local branch first — hours, criteria and whether an appointment is needed vary considerably between branches.

What it typically costs

Many branches charge a modest fee, and many will waive it entirely for people who cannot pay. Some request a donation instead. Ask directly when you phone; nobody at an SPCA will think less of you for the question, and they would far rather you brought the animal in than left them suffering.

Can you be present

Policies differ by branch. Some allow owners to stay throughout, others do not because of how their facilities are laid out. If being with your pet matters to you — and for many people it is the whole point — ask when you phone and, if the answer is no, ask whether another branch or a low-cost private option might allow it.

Aftercare

Standard SPCA aftercare is usually communal disposal, with no ashes returned. If you want an individual cremation with ashes back, you will normally need to arrange that separately with a private crematorium, and you should raise it before the appointment rather than afterwards.
