What It Costs to Sterilise a Dog or Cat in South Africa
Typical private practice prices
Sterilisation is priced by species, sex and body weight, because anaesthetic drugs are dosed by weight and a spay takes longer than a castration.
- Cat castration — roughly R700 to R1,500
- Cat spay — roughly R1,100 to R2,300
- Small dog castration — roughly R1,200 to R2,500
- Small dog spay — roughly R1,800 to R3,500
- Large dog spay — roughly R3,000 to R6,500
A giant breed such as a Boerboel or Great Dane sits above that again, largely on anaesthetic volume and theatre time.
What should be included
A fair quote covers the pre-anaesthetic examination, the anaesthetic, the surgery, in-hospital pain relief and the discharge medication. Ask specifically whether take-home pain relief is in the price — it sometimes is not, and it should be.
Pre-anaesthetic bloods are usually quoted separately at R400 to R900. For a healthy young animal they are optional; for an older one they are worth doing.
Subsidised and outreach clinics
Every major SPCA runs sterilisation at heavily reduced rates, commonly R200 to R700, and many run free campaigns in specific communities. Mdzananda, CLAW, Sterilise-a-Pet and a number of provincial welfare organisations do the same.
These are real veterinary surgeries performed by registered vets. The saving comes from subsidy, not from a lower standard of care.
Why the timing matters financially
A single unplanned litter costs far more than the sterilisation would have: vaccinations, deworming, food and often a caesarean. An emergency caesarean alone runs R8,000 to R20,000 after hours.
Pyometra — a uterine infection in unspayed females, common in South African practice from about six years of age — is a surgical emergency costing R8,000 to R18,000. Spaying prevents it outright.
Questions worth asking
Ask what monitoring is used during anaesthesia, whether a nurse stays with your pet through recovery, and what the practice does if there is a complication overnight.
A cheaper quote from a practice that sends animals home the same afternoon without pain relief is not actually cheaper. Compare what is being done, not just the total.
If the day is coming
Ease The Paw coordinates in-home pet euthanasia across South Africa — we find and book the vet, arrange the cremation and handle the keepsakes, so you can simply be present. A flat R950 covers the coordination and your keepsake memorial; the vet and cremation are billed separately at their own rates.
