Excessive Barking: Finding the Why Before Fixing the Noise

Diagnose first

Alarm barking at passers-by, demand barking at you, boredom barking alone in the yard, and anxiety barking when isolated are different problems with different fixes. Punishing the noise without addressing the cause just creates a quieter, more stressed dog.

Alarm barkers

Manage the view: frosted window film or closed blinds on the trigger window removes the TV channel. Then teach 'thank you — done': acknowledge the alert, call them away, reward the disengage. You're not banning barking, you're capping it.

Demand and boredom

Demand barking dies when it stops working — reward quiet, not noise, and be boringly consistent. Boredom barkers need a better day: sniff walks, food puzzles, chews, training minutes. A fulfilled dog has less to say.

The anxiety exception

Barking and howling only when alone is likely separation distress — an emotional problem needing gradual training, not correction. Bark collars on an anxious dog add pain to panic and reliably make things worse.
