It's normal — and it's teachable

Puppies explore the world with their mouths and play-bite constantly. It isn't aggression, but it does need gentle redirection so it fades before those needle teeth become adult jaws. The aim is bite inhibition — teaching a soft mouth — not suppression through fear.

Yelp, stop, redirect

When teeth touch skin, let out a short high 'ouch' and calmly stop the game for a moment. This mimics how littermates teach each other. The lesson is simple: teeth on skin ends the fun. Then offer a toy — something they're allowed to bite — and resume gently.

Meet the real need

Much biting spikes when a puppy is over-tired or under-stimulated. Enforced nap times, chew toys, and short training games drain the energy behind the nipping. A frozen chew soothes teething gums, a common driver in young puppies.

What never to do

Don't smack the muzzle or hold the mouth shut — it teaches fear of hands and can make things worse. If biting is hard, frequent and paired with stiff body language rather than play, ask a reward-based trainer to take a look. Most puppy biting, though, simply grows out with patience.
