Teaching a Puppy to Be Alone (Before It Becomes a Problem)
Why start immediately
Puppies raised with a human always present learn that solitude is abnormal — and discover it for the first time when you return to work. Short, positive alone-time from the first week is the vaccine against separation problems.
The method
During calm moments, settle the puppy in their pen with a chew or stuffed toy, and drift out of sight for seconds, returning before any fuss — then gradually minutes. Vary it through the day. Calm departures and boring returns; the message is 'this is unremarkable'.
Read the data
A cheap camera or a propped phone shows the truth: relaxed chewing then a nap means you're on track. Pacing, constant crying or door-scratching means shrink the duration and rebuild. Progress is not linear during teething and fear periods — that's normal.
Set up for success
Alone-time goes best after exercise and toilet, in a safe cozy space, with something legal to do. Radio or soft TV masks outside sounds. The goal by adulthood: a dog who hears you leave and thinks 'nap time', not 'abandonment'.
