Tick-Bite Fever (Biliary) in Dogs: The South African Owner's Guide

If you own a dog in South Africa, few words strike more worry than biliary — also called tick-bite fever. It's caused by a tiny parasite carried by ticks that attacks your dog's red blood cells, and it can turn a happy, bouncy dog into a very sick one within a day or two. The good news: it's largely preventable, and caught early, most dogs recover well.

What actually happens

When an infected tick bites your dog, it passes on a parasite that destroys red blood cells. Because those cells carry oxygen around the body, your dog becomes weak, feverish and, in serious cases, dangerously anaemic. It progresses quickly, which is why knowing the early signs matters so much.

Warning signs to watch for

• Lethargy — a normally lively dog that suddenly can't be bothered to get up.
• Loss of appetite — turning away from food and treats.
• Pale gums — lift the lip; healthy gums are pink, biliary gums go pale or whitish.
• Fever, weakness, or a wobbly walk.
• Dark or orange urine in more advanced cases.

If you see pale gums together with lethargy, treat it as an emergency and get to a vet the same day.

Prevention is everything

• Use a reliable tick control product all year round — chewable tablets, spot-ons or collars. Ask your vet which suits your area, as tick pressure varies across the country.
• Check your dog daily, especially after walks in long grass or the bush. Run your hands over the ears, neck, armpits and between the toes.
• Remove ticks promptly with a tick hook or tweezers, gripping close to the skin and pulling steadily.
• Keep your garden grass short — ticks love long, damp grass.

When to see the vet

Don't wait it out. Biliary can be diagnosed with a quick blood smear and treated effectively, but the earlier the better. If your dog is pale, flat and off their food, that's your cue to go — even at 2am.
