Travelling With Pets in South Africa: The Complete Guide
Before you go
Confirm your accommodation genuinely allows pets — in writing, not just a listing that says ‘pet friendly’. Check your pet is up to date on vaccinations, tick and flea prevention, and microchipped with current details, because more pets go missing away from home. Pack their own food (a sudden diet change plus travel stress is the classic holiday vet visit), a water bowl, bedding, meds, and a recent photo in case they wander.
If your pet has never travelled, a few short practice drives beforehand make the real trip far calmer.
On the road
Secure your pet — a harness seatbelt, a crate, or a barrier. An unrestrained dog is a danger to everyone in a crash and in a sudden stop. Travel in the cooler parts of the day, stop every couple of hours for a toilet and stretch break, and never leave a pet in a parked car, even briefly — a South African car heats to lethal temperatures within minutes.
Cats usually travel best in a covered carrier that stays put; most prefer to stay hidden and quiet.
At your destination
Keep the first day low-key while they adjust. Set up a familiar corner with their bed and bowls, keep them leashed or indoors until they know the layout, and be extra careful with gates and doors in an unfamiliar place. A little caution the first day prevents a lost-pet panic on holiday.
Where Ease The Paw fits in
Ease The Paw is a South African pet-care community and end-of-life coordination service. Members get a full toolkit — health records, care reminders, a symptom checker, breed and feeding guides, trackers and more — and when the hardest day eventually comes, we coordinate everything with one WhatsApp. For now, though, this guide is here to help you enjoy the good years.
If the day is coming
Ease The Paw coordinates in-home pet euthanasia across South Africa — we find and book the vet, arrange the cremation and handle the keepsakes, so you can simply be present. A flat R950 covers the coordination and your keepsake memorial; the vet and cremation are billed separately at their own rates.
